The Name Bangalore
Somewhere around 11th century, the Vijayanagar King Veera Ballala II was out for hunting in the forest. He went so deep that he was not able to come out of the forest. He was very hungry and tired. Fortunately he came across a old woman who gave him shelter and some boiled beans to fill his stomach. The next day, the king could make out of the forest, safe and sure. The grateful king built a small town there and named the place as Benda-kal-uru which in Kannada means the city of Boiled Beans. The Benda-kal-uru later became Bengaluru and then the modern name Bangalore. And again, today, Bangalore is officially known as Bengaluru. However, Kempegowda is considered as the father of Bengaluru who gave the city a modern shape!
